A Top 10 list is a good starting point: it shows you who stands out overall. Whether rank 1 is also the best choice for you depends on things a general ranking can only partly capture – your budget, your schedule, where you live and what matters most to you.

How to use a Top 10 list

Read beyond rank 1. Ranks two to five are often close together, and the difference may lie in exactly the point that matters to you.

Look at the two details on every card, such as location and price level or district and focus. They quickly rule out what does not fit.

Open the detail pages of your favourites. Under “Why is … in the Top 10?” you will see what a provider is valued for, with excerpts from real reviews below. “Rating in detail” shows where a provider is strong: if value for money matters most to you, look at exactly that row.

Eight questions before you hire

1. Does their focus match your project?

A wedding photographer is not automatically the best choice for application photos, and an agency for large online shops is not the obvious pick for a small practice website. Ask for examples similar to your project.

2. How far away are they – and does it matter?

For a photo shoot or a delivery every kilometre counts, for an agency often not at all. Decide beforehand whether “local” is a must for you.

3. What does it cost, and what is included?

Ask what the price covers and what costs extra: travel, editing, licences, maintenance. A transparent quote is a good sign in itself.

4. When can you get an appointment or a quote?

The best provider is of little use if they are booked for three months. Ask about availability early.

5. Who will actually work for you?

Especially with larger businesses, it is worth asking who will take on your project and who your fixed contact will be.

6. How does communication work?

How fast do answers come, and through which channel? Your first enquiry often shows what working together will be like.

7. What do the reviews say about your kind of request?

Average stars say a lot, but not everything. Read the reviews of people who wanted something similar to you – and see how the provider responds to criticism. What to look out for is explained in our guide How can you tell genuine, trustworthy online reviews?.

8. What happens if something goes wrong?

Clarify beforehand how corrections, cancellations or warranty are handled. Good providers have a clear answer.

The practical steps

  1. Pick two or three providers from the Top 10 list that fit your project.
  2. Send all of them the same short description: what you need, by when and with what budget.
  3. Compare the answers not only by price but also by clarity and speed.
  4. Decide after a short conversation – your gut feeling counts too.

A ranking tells you who performs best on average. In the end, you make the choice that is right for you – ideally with the information from several ranks.
